Where it all started!

Where it all started.... Bonnaroo!

Back in 2003, I was dating a really fun guy who was into Phish and the Dead. I know, the word "fun" should not actually apply here. But he was fun. So he says to me, "hey, let's go to this cool music festival in Tennessee!" I said, "yes, let's!" We had a fantastic time. Met lots of groovy people. Here I am at the trash sculpture. Interestingly, the "scarf worn as top" idea was carried over by my own daughter, who can be seen in a similar get-up, in THE SAME COWBOY HAT, 13 years later! By far, the most important fashion decision I've ever made at a music festival was to bring my Hunter wellies. It happened to POUR rain briefly one evening, but was not raining the next day. It was, however EXTREMELY muddy. As I made my way through the muck in my boots, there were people literally stopping to clap their hands, and say, "oh my god, you're so smart!" or "I wish I had those!"

Me at Bonnaroo, 2004

my daughter at Bonnaroo, 2017:

Side note: there were sooo many naked people at Bonnaroo. Mostly girls. Lots of boobies. Can't show that stuff. But we were permanently scarred by many of the sights, like a girl who literally stripped naked, body painted herself, attached some wings, and carried on.
But I digress, because that's not actually fashion, that's performance art. Back to fashion!

Here's a hat that I saw that I actually adore:

.... quite adorable, no? And of course for Bonnaroo, we all found out how incredibly handy fanny packs were.

We actually found a great collection of them, and coordinated them with our outfits. Next I'm sure we will start wearing camelbaks but that's a step too far for now.

Governor's Ball NYC, 2018

Our next festival was Governor's Ball NYC in 2018, and we got a great hotel within walking distance. Every day we'd hike about 2 miles to the festival site, so shoe choice was key.  We wore Converse or Adidas. The very first day it was actually pretty hot, and a dude in line literally collapsed on his face. OK, drinking could have been involved. His buddy picked him up and he had a nasty cut on his forehead. Hope he was ok! We, however, were safe and responsible festival kids. Well, I was. Loren and her friends were SQUISHED up front! You can se her in the center of this picture, holding her phone, in front of Spencer who's wearing a green shirt and a floppy hat. (While I first judged that hat as goofy, it did turn out to be a blessing because it made him easy to find!) Allie is in front of Lo and Bailey is beside Allie doing the devil horns sign.

I was NOT part of the above-pictured crowd, because I'm an adulty type concert goer.
I was in the 21+ tent next to the Honda Stage. It was not packed with sweaty people, there was zero bar line, and comfy seating! And all the freshest styles were represented! Like the couple below, who were super adorable. She had on a US flag styled cape, a red tank bodysuit, and white denim shorts. Her look was completed by gold low boots and she sported blue lipstick. His look, a matching ensemble with a pattern stolen directly from 1984, was topped by a black flat-brimmed faux captain cap. I like this pair because they reference James Brown and George Michael and have a sense of fun.

Another fun outfit I noticed was the one below... Something about the graphic hoodie, black Sambas, and normal shirt tied around his waist that made it look like half a skirt was clever to me. I dig the whole thing, I don't know why.

Popular this year were these cheesy homemade bracelets with letters that spell things. The girls made them with various personal statements. You can probably guess mine were "Mama" and "your Mom."

So here ends my first post on the newly minted fashion blog "Turned Out" because, I can't tell a lie. At GovBall, I happened to sneak into the VIP tent during Khalid's performance. I went to the bar to grab a refreshment and struck up a conversation with the server. I told her I was a fashion blogger just because it felt fancy. But then I thought, "WHY NOT?!"
